U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, July 7, while attending the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, that the U.S. would consider selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. He told reporters that Ankara has been a wonderful ally to the U.S. Trump also reiterated that Greenland should be controlled by the U.S. President Trump held a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Erdogan, praised the relationship between the two countries, and affirmed Turkey's attempts to help end the conflict between the U.S. and Iran.
President Trump said his administration is working to lift sanctions that have prevented Turkey from purchasing F-35 fighter jets. The U.S. imposed sanctions on Turkey in 2020 after Turkey purchased Russia's S-400 air defense system. Erdogan said Turkey has received a commitment from the U.S. to sell it five aircraft.
Meanwhile, Trump reiterated that Greenland should be controlled by the U.S. He said Greenland is surrounded by Chinese and Russian vessels. Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen responded by saying she hopes this will not happen.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced a series of multi-billion dollar new defense agreements on July 7, attempting to convince U.S. President Trump that NATO's European allies and countries like Canada are increasing defense spending and will translate investments into real military capabilities.

The 2026 summit kicked off with a defense industry forum that unusually focused on strengthening joint procurement and industrial cooperation. At the defense industry forum, Rutte announced a series of projects aimed at strengthening allied capabilities in airlift intelligence and surveillance. The first project is a multinational modernization program centered on a fleet of Airbus A400M military transport aircraft and Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft. Rutte stated that some allies officially announced the upcoming delivery of more Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft. He called the project an important step in strengthening NATO's strategic airlift and refueling capabilities. He also announced a joint procurement project for MQ-4C Triton drones to enhance NATO's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. These newly added aircraft will provide continuous surveillance over vast areas of the ocean, he said.
The third project announced by Rutte is the renewal of NATO's aging Airborne Warning and Control System fleet. The US House of Representatives Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party posted on X that China's launch of a long-range ballistic missile is not just a routine training exercise, but another aggressive act by the the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against America's Indo-Pacific allies and partners.

The US Department of State released a press statement on Monday titled “China Launches Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile into the Pacific.” State Department Spokesperson Thomas Tommy Pigott said in the statement that at a time when the United States is working harder than ever to prevent nuclear proliferation, China is moving in the opposite direction. Beijing's rapid and opaque nuclear weapons expansion is deeply concerning to the region and the entire world. The statement said the United States continues to urge China to engage in substantive arms control discussions and to commit to establishing a regular notification mechanism for all intercontinental-range ballistic missile launches and space launches, consistent with commitments already made by all other P5 members.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference in Beijing on Monday that this launch complies with international law and international practice. Meanwhile, the US-led Rim of the Pacific exercise is taking place in Hawaii. Concurrently, China test-fired a submarine-launched missile into the Pacific for the first time in two years.
