You know, I think he recognizes that summitry has become important to the relationship just in terms of adding stability or maybe one way to put it is keeps a floor under the relationship. And, you know, this particular reciprocal visit might end up being the second of four face-to-face meetings this year if they meet at the G20 and at APEC.
So in a way, you know, we're sort of putting symmetry in the position of providing the stability in the ballast and putting a floor into the relationship.
I think number two, the president is probably more focused on the trade and economic aspects of the relationship, and that's probably what he would prefer to focus on.
so if you track the meetings from busan where you had a a pause and a temporary framework agreement to beijing in may to now uh xi jinping's reciprocal visit i think they're really hoping to solidify uh an approach to trade that is more sustainable and i think the trump administration would say more balanced and fair and and thus more sustainable so i think that's a priority um there are obviously other issues that president trump is spending time and energy on uh how he will approach uh china on those it's not entirely clear but certainly we benefit from china's help in uh the conflict with iran and ukraine if they were inclined to be more helpful i'm not sure they are so those are things that president trump may raise uh so we'll see largely agree with that i think uh underscoring the um point on trade and I think providing some sustainable approach or at least sustainable through the next couple of years as it relates to the tariffs on our end and managing Beijing's response to those.
There's discussion in terms of a specific, the Board of Trade is certainly on the agenda as a way to try to manage the aspects of that trade relationship.
I think clearly there's an interest in both sides in establishing some kind of dialogue that is sustainable as it relates to some, I think, the risks and safety issues that come with frontier AI development in both countries. I think clearly there's a recognition on both sides of a need to establish that.
I think what the commission and other observers I think will be interested in just what's the scope of an AI dialogue and how specific will they get.
I think Xi Jinping and the Chinese would love some relief on export controls, greater access to U.S. technology and cooperation.
I think they'd love, you know, incremental gains, if not stronger commitments on issues like Taiwan and the South China Sea and Tibet and things that they've always identified as core interests.
I think they'd love to have a better understanding of U.S. commitment to allies going forward. And is there room for U.S.-China cooperation in a way that surpasses our reliance on close partners and allies?
All of these things are, I think, in the in the quiver, but I think also the Chinese are pragmatic and will approach these things with, you know, a degree of pragmatism, whether we'll only look for incremental gains unless President Trump signals otherwise.
I think that's really well put. Not a lot to add, I think. I think just underscoring, I think there's a moment I would imagine for President Xi to really, you know, try to achieve some of those goals and walk away from the summit with kind of, as Randy said, I think a seeking deference on some issues.
I think particularly while the administration is rightly distracted with conflicts elsewhere around the world and with election season upon us, I think there's an opportunity for President Xi to achieve a number of those goals.
