A Singaporean couple joined a six-day, five-night group tour of Guizhou on September 8. On the final day of the itinerary, the tour guide took them to a jade shopping venue, where they spent 37,240 yuan on about 16 pieces of jade jewelry. One of the items, a Buddha amulet accompanied by an appraisal certificate listing it as "ink jade," was found to be serpentine when tested by the Nanyang Gemological Institute after they returned home. The couple's daughter said her mother called twice during the shopping trip to ask for money, a total of 6,500 Singapore dollars, and appeared helpless.
