In May this year, two shallow earthquakes measuring magnitude 5.2 and 5.3 struck Liuzhou, Guangxi in succession, with an exceptionally short interval between them. Some say that the construction of the Pinglu Canal altered the terrain and may have triggered the shallow earthquakes, while the breach of the Liulan Reservoir is believed to be related to the earthquakes.
