Taiwan MQ-9B “Sea Guardian” test flight strengthens monitoring of China’s “gray zone” operations
Of the four MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones sold by the United States to Taiwan, the first two conducted their maiden test flights in the airspace off eastern Taiwan on September 14. According to the manufacturer, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, the MQ-9B Sea Guardian is an extended variant of the Sky Guardian, specifically designed for maritime missions. It is equipped with rapidly detachable maritime-specific sensors and can perform beyond-line-of-sight flight missions via satellite links under various weather conditions. With an endurance of over 30 hours, it provides real-time situational awareness over vast maritime areas.
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems specifically noted that the unique feature of the MQ-9B Sea Guardian is that it not only integrates state-of-the-art maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, but it is also the first remotely piloted aircraft system of its kind capable of simultaneous real-time search and patrol both above and below the sea surface, allowing it to monitor and track the movements of submarines.
According to Taiwanese media reports, the first two of the four MQ-9B drones sold by the U.S. to Taiwan were handed over in the U.S. this March and conducted their first test flights in the airspace off eastern Taiwan on September 14.
According to a research report by Kao Chih-jung, a researcher at Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research, the deployment of the MQ-9B signifies that Taiwan's aerial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities have extended toward the Chinese mainland, the open ocean, and offshore areas. He stated that at standard operating altitudes, the MQ-9B has a surveillance radius of approximately 360 kilometers, meaning a single MQ-9B circling at high altitude can grasp the dynamics of the entire Taiwan Strait as well as parts of the Bashi Channel and the Miyako Strait.
The MQ-9B is a more advanced model of the MQ-9A Reaper reconnaissance and attack drone and can perform various attack missions, including anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare. The Taiwanese military stated that Taiwan's MQ-9Bs will be used primarily for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions rather than as attack drones. Their key mission is to monitor the People's Liberation Army (PLA) warships and China Coast Guard vessels conducting gray-zone incursions around Taiwan, and to form a high-low mix with Taiwan's domestically produced Teng Yun large drones to complete surveillance missions in the waters surrounding Taiwan.
