NATO Summit Focuses on Defense Budget, the Russia-Ukraine War, and Iran
NATO Secretary General Rutte and host Turkish President Erdogan personally welcomed world leaders attending the NATO summit. After the group photo, the most important leaders' summit session began.
A key goal of this NATO summit in Ankara is to secure a U.S. commitment to NATO by demonstrating to U.S. President Trump the organization's determination to enhance its own defense capabilities. President Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO member states in public for failing to support the United States in its conflict with Iran.
Rutte praised the surge in military spending by many allies over the past year, and on Tuesday he helped announce deals worth billions of dollars in new weapons and other military systems. As the summit was underway, Iran attacked three commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States promptly launched strikes in response, while Iran said it had attacked U.S. bases in the Middle East in retaliation.
U.S. President Trump expressed to Rutte his dissatisfaction with Iran's failure to comply with the ceasefire agreement, and NATO Secretary General Rutte also emphasized his support for U.S. strikes on Iran.
In addition to the Iran issue, the NATO summit will also discuss how to end the Russia-Ukraine war. During the leaders' summit, President Trump will hold bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
