1. Li Yuanchao
Li Yuanchao was also a "worker-peasant-soldier university student." In 1972, he was recommended by a farm to study at Shanghai Normal University and graduated in 1974. However, when the college entrance examination was resumed in 1977, Li Yuanchao resolutely chose to take the exam again, and was finally admitted to the Department of Mathematics at Fudan University. After graduation, he taught in the management department at Fudan. Just like a "worker-peasant-soldier university student," Li Yuanchao passed the college entrance examination with his own ability, making the junior high school student Xi Jinping pale with shame and nowhere to hide.

2. Liu Yuan
During the 1988 elections for local people's congresses in China, two major events shook the political arena:
Fujian: Xi Jinping, as the provincial party committee's designated "acting mayor" and the only mayoral candidate, only needed to go through the motions of a "rubber stamp" in the Xiamen Municipal People's Congress election, but unexpectedly lost the election!
In his personal and political low point, Jia Qinglin, a "political benefactor," timely threw him a "lifebuoy" and transferred him to Ningde at the same level to take over as the prefectural party secretary. The secretary was directly appointed by the party committee, completely avoiding the risk of voting by the people's congress.
Henan: Liu Yuan was not the candidate designated by the party committee, but was nominated by the representatives and successfully elected as vice governor.
This unexpected result greatly shocked the Henan Provincial Party Committee, which urgently requested instructions from the central government overnight: "Is this election valid?" Liu Yuan's existence has become an indelible psychological shadow in his life. This article from the People's Daily in 2015 records Xi Jinping's self-justification for that past setback. Xi's original words: "I served as deputy mayor of Xiamen for three years, and for a period in the latter part, I was in charge of executive work... Comrade Jia Qinglin was then the deputy secretary of the provincial party committee and the head of the organization department. He talked to me and said, 'The provincial party committee wants you to go to Ningde to make a breakthrough...' Xi ambiguously said "in charge of executive work." The people of Xiamen all know that he was the acting mayor at the time, and the provincial party committee had already internally appointed him as mayor, and only needed to go through the motions at the people's congress. Xi's rhetoric was nothing more than an attempt to cover up the humiliation of not even being able to get a "rubber stamp" back then, and it turned out to be a self-inflicted wound.

3. Zhu Rongji
The Moment He Refused to Clap
On October 18, 2017, at the opening ceremony of the 19th National Congress of the CCP. After Xi Jinping finished his three-hour report, he turned around and bowed to the elders in the front row. Amidst the thunderous applause from the audience, the camera captured a shocking scene between 6 and 10 seconds of the CCTV video: Zhu Rongji, sitting in the center, with a blank expression and his hands still, not only refused to clap but didn't even look at Xi Jinping, who was right in front of him. It wasn't until 30 seconds into the video, when Xi left Zhu's sight and shook hands with Jiang and Hu behind him, that Zhu followed suit and clapped a few times perfunctorily. This "awkward silence" was Zhu Rongji's most silent yet strongest protest against Xi's policies.
The Yuanhua Case: The "Last Place" Who Escaped
Xi Jinping's fear and hatred of Zhu Rongji can be traced back to the infamous "Yuanhua smuggling case" in 1999. At that time, Zhu Rongji personally supervised the investigation, targeting officials in Fujian. Lai Changxing's biggest backer was precisely Xi's political ally Jia Qinglin. As the then governor of Fujian, Xi Jinping was hard to escape responsibility, but under the joint protection of Jiang Zemin and Jia Qinglin, a miracle happened: Chen Mingyi, the provincial party secretary, who was originally upright and scholarly, was pushed out to bear leadership responsibility, resigned as provincial party secretary, and transferred to the CPPCC; Shi Zhaobin, who received a very high number of votes at the 15th National Congress and ranked fifth among alternate members, was sentenced to prison. Ironically, at the 15th National Congress in 1997, Xi ranked last in votes among the 151 alternate members. (Figure 2) This person with "last place in popular support" emerged unscathed from the bloody storm of the Yuanhua case and was transferred to Zhejiang as acting governor.
Estate Liquidation and Academic Inferiority Complex
Zhu Rongji was the meritorious official of the CCP's "entry into the WTO." He spoke softly to please Europe and the United States, allowing China to join the WTO and making great contributions to China becoming the world's factory. The technocratic governance and market-oriented route established during Zhu's tenure have now been completely overturned by Xi Jinping's "state advances, private retreats." In order to completely eliminate Zhu's influence, Xi precisely targeted Zhu's former financial confidants during the anti-corruption campaign.
The Most Awkward Relationship Between the Two is "Tsinghua Alumni"
Zhu Rongji was an elite who was admitted to Tsinghua University's Department of Electrical Engineering through exams; while Xi Jinping's first diploma was from the "worker-peasant-soldier program" recommended by the village party secretary, and his later doctoral degree was a虚衔 (empty title) ghostwritten by his secretary and could not withstand scrutiny. This contrast between a "real scholar" and a "fake doctor" makes Xi Jinping not only feel politically guilty when facing Zhu Rongji but also intellectually inferior.
