In June 2008, Wang Yi, Vice President of the China Development Bank, who had been in a relationship with Liu Fangfei and paid off her mortgage, was taken away by a special investigation team of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection for 'shuanggui' (a form of detention for party members). He was later sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in 2010.

Li Wei met Wang Yi, then vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), through Li Jiating, and afterwards began taking heavy positions in listed companies under Sinopec.
