After the July 1 New Petitioning Rules, More Petitioners Voluntarily Enter Jiujingzhuang to Pressure Local Authorities
Jiujingzhuang on Nanyuan Road in Fengtai District, Beijing, is a concentration camp where the authorities detain petitioners and rights defenders who travel to Beijing to petition. After the July 1 new petitioning rules took effect, more petitioners chose to enter the compound voluntarily to pressure local jurisdictions; detentions during sensitive periods are coercive, and mobile phones are confiscated at security checks upon entry.
