Pudong Border Inspection Discourages Travelers from Going to Japan Citing a “Red Alert”; Travelers Allowed Through After Insisting
On October 10, a traveler flying from Shanghai Pudong to Fukuoka with a child was told by border inspection staff that Japan was a “red alert area” and was advised to give up the trip; after the traveler said they were determined to go, the staff stamped the passport and let them through. Another traveler said that even using the self-service channel for Japan requires manual verification and a reading of the risk warning, while no such dissuasion applies when traveling to the United States. In fact, China’s Consular Service website lists most of Japan as a low-risk area.
