On Wednesday (May 7), the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill under which American universities with ties to certain Chinese universities would be barred from receiving Department of Homeland Security funding. Lead sponsor, Republican Representative Ploug, said there is already evidence that the Chinese Communist Party has maliciously expanded its influence in the United States through programs such as Confucius Institutes.

After years of development, most Confucius Institutes exist in name only, and some U.S. universities have directly closed their Confucius Institutes.

About 15 years ago, Confucius Institutes expanded at American universities under the name of promoting Chinese culture and teaching the Chinese language, and at their peak about 70–80 and 150 universities had Confucius Institutes.
