During the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Khomeini formed a united front with leftists, liberals and communists to overthrow the Pahlavi dynasty; after seizing power, he gradually marginalized and purged the communists, and around 1983 he massively banned the leaders of the Communist Party of Iran, establishing a theocratic regime.
