An NPR interview with US and Chinese officials on September 17 disclosed that ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting, the two sides were still jockeying over issues such as state banquet seating (about 100 tables versus about 200 people in 2015), rare earth export controls and the delay of chip restrictions (expiring on November 10), and an order for 200 Boeing aircraft. China once proposed extending the suspension of rare earth controls until January 2029, but the US side rejected it.
