In 2016, Yuan Rongxiang, founding president of the Canada-China Friendship Promotion Association, donated 1,500 Canadian dollars to the Montreal riding association of then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and 2,800 Canadian dollars to the federal Liberal Party, and posed for a photo with Trudeau at a party fundraising event. Three other directors of Tiger Arms, the Port Coquitlam gun shop under his name, each donated 1,500 Canadian dollars as well. This series of political donations subsequently triggered extensive scrutiny and questioning in Canadian society and the media over pro-Beijing united front community leaders approaching senior politicians and the infiltration of foreign influence.
