U.S. Department of State Identifies Far-Left Organizations Such as 'Code Pink' and 'The People’s Forum' as Vehicles for Chinese Influence Operations

The State Department submitted a report to Congress on Tuesday linking left-wing non-profits Code Pink and The People’s Forum to Chinese influence operations.
Sarah Rogers, the State Department’s under secretary for public diplomacy, said in a statement provided to The Post:
“While certain partisan fixers spent years peddling the hoax of ‘Russian collusion,’ they turned a blind eye to the vast network of far-left radical groups pushing the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda.”
Rogers added:
“Organizations like Code Pink and The People’s Forum denigrate America, whitewash the violent history of Marxist regimes and run interference for China on one hand, while enjoying massive funding inflows from donor networks linked to the Chinese Communist Party on the other.”
“The State Department will push for full transparency to expose the donor and NGO networks lobbying for our adversaries and seeking to undermine America’s resolve.”
The report, titled Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, accused China of “disseminating propaganda through influence operations operated by organizations such as Code Pink, The People’s Forum, and groups linked to the notorious Singham network.”
The so-called Singham network refers to a series of non-profit organizations funded by tech tycoon Neville Roy Singham, whose wife is a co-founder of Code Pink.
The New York Times reported in 2023 that Singham, an American expat living in China, “works closely with the Chinese government media machine and finances its propaganda efforts worldwide.”
The report continued:
“PRC diplomats, state media, and pro-PRC influencers issue pro-CCP propaganda content through social media, content-sharing agreements, and local partnerships. The PRC also leverages public diplomacy, exchange programs, journalist delegations, and educational and cultural initiatives to improve its image.”
The report assessed:
“The PRC, Iran, and Russia aggressively utilize state media, proxies, and digital platforms to spread propaganda and disinformation to undermine U.S. credibility and policies and expand their influence.”
Code Pink, founded in 2002, originally started as an anti-war organization. The group has accused the U.S. of launching a “war on China.”
According to the State Department, the non-profit spreads pro-China talking points through its “China Is Not Our Enemy” working group.
Code Pink has encouraged Americans to travel to China and collects contact information from individuals interested in visiting the U.S. adversary.
The group has promoted a travel program on its website, saying participants “learn revolutionary history in Ruijin” and visit “villages transformed by poverty alleviation projects.”
One participant said the trip left him thinking that people must “protect [China] from our government's aggression.”
According to the State Department, Code Pink has also hosted pro-China webinars, during which one activist praised the Chinese communist revolution—which resulted in tens of millions of deaths—as “the forward path to liberation.”
Another U.S. activist who went on a trip to China and participated in a webinar complained:
“I had already lost my love for our country, but this just ... completely finalized everything.”
Meanwhile, The People’s Forum, based in New York City, has been accused of praising the Chinese communist revolution and studying it as a potential model for the revolutionary left in the U.S.
The State Department noted that the organization hosted three courses on the Chinese revolution directed at those “aiming to make revolution by studying the processes of revolution!” Additionally, the group organized pro-Maduro protests following the capture and ousting of the Venezuelan leader by U.S. forces.
Manolo de Los Santos, the group’s founder, reportedly met with Maduro in 2021.
Code Pink and The People’s Forum did not respond to requests for comment from The Post by press time.
