Taiwan's Diplomatic Allies Again Urge Taiwan's Participation in the UN: Cross-Strait Pressure Is Accumulating, Avoid Escalation into a "Wider Conflict"

Permanent representatives of five countries—Palau, the Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia, Belize, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—jointly wrote to the UN Secretariat, arguing that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not exclude Taiwan from participating in the UN, and calling for the avoidance of cross-strait conflict and the admission of Taiwan. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists on the One-China principle, while the Taiwan side expressed its gratitude for this support.

Permanent representatives of five countries—Palau, the Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia, Belize, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—submitted a joint letter to the UN Secretariat. The letter points out that pressure in the Taiwan Strait is accumulating; the strait is vital to global cargo transport, and all parties should advocate for dialogue and inclusion to eliminate the mounting pressure and avoid escalation into a wider conflict, which would require much greater efforts to resolve later.

A focal point of this joint letter is UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. Taiwan's diplomatic allies argue that this resolution does not exclude Taiwan from meaningfully participating in the UN system. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference on September 8 that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 confirms the One-China principle and resolved the issue of representation for the whole of China, including Taiwan, at the United Nations. However, the representatives of Taiwan's allies hold the opposite view. The Permanent Representative of the Marshall Islands, Amatlain Kabua, emphasized Taiwan's right to representation, while the Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Inga Rhonda King, called for a re-examination of Taiwan's current inability to participate in the UN.

James K.J. Lee, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, expressed gratitude for the support from diplomatic allies and called on the UN to find appropriate ways to include Taiwan's participation, stating that Taiwan hopes to contribute to issues such as sustainable development and to implement the UN's goal of leaving no one behind.
