The Dangers of Anti-Chinese Bigotry in the Anti-CCP Movement and Strategic Reflections

In recent years, with the rise of the anti-CCP movement, numerous discourses and ideological currents have emerged in online spaces. Among them, the phenomenon of “anti-Chinese bigotry”—targeting China as a whole or its people with extreme rhetoric, insults, and stigmatization—has become especially prominent. These expressions are often attempts to express dissatisfaction or resistance against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). However, such behavior not only fails to weaken the CCP regime but actually causes serious harm to the anti-CCP cause.

Firstly, such rhetoric creates division within the movement itself. The ultimate goal of the anti-CCP movement is to overthrow authoritarianism and pursue democracy and freedom—goals that require broad public support. When anti-CCP rhetoric frames all Chinese people as enemies, it alienates the very people who should be mobilized, pushing many back into the arms of the CCP. This, in effect, helps the regime consolidate its power.

Secondly, anti-Chinese bigotry seriously undermines the movement’s international reputation. Support from the global community is vital, but bigoted language filled with racism and discrimination provides ammunition for the CCP to discredit the movement. The international public is misled into thinking anti-CCP activists are merely hateful extremists, which severely diminishes sympathy and support for the cause.

Even more concerning is that some anti-CCP individuals, due to unclear distinctions between the Chinese people and the CCP, unwittingly become part of the regime’s long-term strategy to stigmatize Chinese people. This is a dangerous misjudgment. On one hand, they seek to expose the CCP’s tyranny; on the other, their rhetoric plays into the CCP’s propaganda trap. The regime deliberately binds the image of China and the Chinese people to itself in foreign media narratives, creating a negative perception abroad. This leads the international community to view the Chinese people as inherently tied to dictatorship, thereby pressuring Chinese individuals to feel that only by clinging to the CCP can they find protection. These inflammatory expressions, originally meant to resist, are repurposed by the regime, pushing disillusioned Chinese citizens back into submission and severely weakening the movement’s credibility.

Third, such emotional outbursts drown out rational discourse. Effective anti-CCP action requires constructive dialogue, analysis of the regime’s structural flaws, and realistic alternatives. But the rise of extreme speech in anti-CCP spaces poisons online discussion, making it harder for serious critiques to be heard and understood.

Additionally, this kind of speech damages potential bridges between the anti-CCP movement and reform-minded individuals within China. Many discontented citizens are not yet ready for full revolution but hope for gradual progress. When they are met with generalized hatred toward all Chinese, they retreat in distrust—something that benefits the CCP.

Moreover, drawing a clear line between the CCP and the Chinese people is a key strategic necessity. The CCP is not China and does not represent the Chinese people. The U.S. government has consistently emphasized this in its China policy. Officials like Mike Pompeo and Joe Biden have publicly stated that the United States opposes the authoritarian regime, not the Chinese people. U.S. policies regarding visas, sanctions, and export controls often target CCP officials and entities directly linked to the regime, while taking care not to affect ordinary citizens. This approach helps prevent Chinese people from rallying behind the CCP and instead maintains goodwill, elevating the moral clarity of the anti-CCP stance.

Crucially, the CCP has always sought to manipulate international opinion by binding the image of the Chinese people to its regime. By encouraging negative stereotypes about Chinese behavior and encouraging backlash abroad, the CCP aims to isolate Chinese individuals from the global community, creating a false dependency on the Party. During the early COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the regime amplified narratives of discrimination and anti-Asian hate to cultivate a siege mentality, suggesting that without the CCP, Chinese people would be unsafe.

It must also be clarified that reasonable criticism of national character has a valid place in anti-CCP discourse. But “national character” is not innate—it is shaped by education and society. In China’s case, what some call “Chinese national traits” are largely the result of CCP indoctrination and the systemic shaping of behavior over generations. This fact is well-supported by psychological and sociological research.

Take, for example, the Stanford Prison Experiment, which showed how average people, placed in hierarchical systems, quickly adapted to roles of oppressor and oppressed. Similarly, the Milgram Experiment revealed how people are likely to abandon personal moral judgment when under authoritative pressure. These studies confirm that personality, behavior, and even conscience are all highly influenced by institutional and social environments. Thus, what is often interpreted as a “national defect” is more accurately a symptom of long-term ideological conditioning and systemic suppression.

Acknowledging the presence of tendencies such as blind obedience, collectivism, cynicism, and emotional indifference among the public is essential for inspiring awakening and introspection. However, such critiques must come from empathy and constructive intent—to help people recognize their oppression and see through CCP lies, not to further marginalize the victims. The anti-CCP struggle cannot rely solely on elite dissent. Its victory ultimately depends on the participation of the vast majority of the Chinese people. Winning their trust and support is a principle that all anti-CCP advocates must keep front of mind.

Therefore, anti-CCP discourse, both at home and abroad, must respect the principle of distinguishing the Party from the people. Only by rejecting the lie that “the Party is the nation” can the movement dismantle CCP propaganda and win both domestic and international support.

Finally, anti-Chinese bigotry sows discord within Chinese communities worldwide. Whether in China or abroad, such speech breeds misunderstanding, conflict, and fragmentation. These internal fractures only strengthen the CCP by weakening unity among those who might otherwise resist.

In conclusion, anti-Chinese bigotry not only fails to bring down the CCP—it actively undermines the long-term strategic goals of the anti-CCP movement. Only by rejecting emotional extremism and embracing rationality, empathy, and constructive criticism can the movement grow stronger and achieve its goal of liberating China from authoritarian rule.
