Over 100,000 Protest Erdoğan’s Government Across Turkey Amid Violent Clashes and Online Censorship
[Istanbul, March 22, 2025] — A massive wave of anti-government protests has erupted across Turkey, with over 100,000 people taking to the streets to denounce President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s increasingly authoritarian rule, economic mismanagement, and suppression of dissent. The protests have spread to more than ten major cities, with some areas witnessing violent clashes between demonstrators and police forces. At the same time, social media platforms have come under fire for allegedly censoring protest-related content.
Protest Size by City According to estimates from the independent watchdog group Demokrasi İzleme, the protests have drawn:
Istanbul: ~45,000 demonstrators in Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds, triggering hours-long standoffs.
Ankara: ~25,000 protesters marched toward the Parliament building chanting “Erdoğan Resign!” and “We Want Freedom.”
Izmir: ~12,000 people gathered peacefully in public squares, with speeches from opposition politicians.
Bursa and Antalya: Combined ~10,000 protesters. Clashes in Antalya included tire burnings and stone-throwing.
Shocking Footage From the Streets One widely circulated video from Taksim Square in Istanbul shows demonstrators standing their ground as tear gas fills the air. Despite the chaos, protesters can be heard singing the Turkish national anthem while holding flags. A young man, his face bloodied, is seen shouting “We are not afraid!” as he’s loaded into an ambulance.
Another video from Ankara’s Constitution Avenue captures thousands banging pots and pans — a symbolic protest move dating back to the 2013 Gezi Park demonstrations — while police in riot gear form barricades.
Censorship on X, YouTube, and Other Platforms As the protests gained momentum, several major platforms were accused of suppressing the movement online.
X (formerly Twitter) Hashtags like #Erdoğanİstifa ("Erdoğan Resign") and #DirenTürkiye ("Resist Turkey") trended globally but were allegedly shadowbanned or limited in visibility within Turkey. Numerous activists and journalists reported that their videos and posts were removed or restricted.
🗣️ Journalist @ozlem_haber tweeted: “My protest footage was flagged as ‘violating local laws.’ My reach dropped to near zero. Our voices are being algorithmically erased.”
YouTube Protest videos showing police violence were removed within hours for “violating community guidelines.” Some independent Turkish media channels had their live-streaming privileges suspended without clear explanation.
“We posted raw footage of what happened. No hate speech, no incitement — just reality. But it was taken down,” said Ankara-based media collective Ankara Voice.
TikTok & Instagram Users reported that protest clips were tagged as “sensitive” or outright deleted, especially those showing direct confrontations with police or large-scale gatherings.
Human Rights Groups Sound the Alarm Human Rights Watch issued a statement:
“Tech companies must not become silent enforcers of authoritarianism. Censorship of peaceful protests only deepens repression.”
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called for transparency, urging platforms to publicly disclose whether they are complying with government takedown requests.
